The
Birds of Ethiopia are so numerous, so diverse and so
colourful. More than 830 species have been recorded compared
to 250 in the UK. Other African countries can claim more
species however Ethiopia boasts the special distinction of
possessing a number of Endemics birds (birds found only in
the country) of these, 16 are found only in Ethiopia and 14
are semi-endemic, shared only with Eritrea.
An Additional advantage of bird watching in Ethiopia is the
frequency of spotting many of the species (including at
least 20 of the semi endemics or endemics). It is also good
because at present only a small number of tourists are
visiting these sites.
The best time to visit Ethiopia for birding is between
November and February, July and August are not as good
because of the rains and the number of birds who are
involved in the emigration in the winter months.
The best time is from dawn to 11am and from 5pm to sunset.
